Guide
Open an .rpt file without Crystal Reports.
An .rpt file holds a report design and, optionally, the data saved with it. What you can see without Crystal Reports depends on that saved data.
Check whether the report has saved data
An .rpt file is a binary file in the OLE2 compound file format, so you need a viewer to read it.
SAP's KBA 2745501 says that the file contains "the report design, as well as the data when the option 'Save Data With Report' is checked". The option is in the File menu.
- With saved data: a viewer can show the pages without a database connection. The rows are a snapshot from the last refresh.
- Without saved data: a viewer must connect to the report's database to show anything. SAP's free viewer cannot do this. It shows "This report file does not contain saved data and cannot be viewed." (KBA 2766920).
Option 1: SAP Crystal Reports Viewer
SAP publishes a free viewer for Windows. The current version is Crystal Reports Viewer 2025. SAP maintains it until December 31, 2027. Download it from SAP's Crystal Reports community page.
The Crystal Solutions FAQ says that it can "interact with the data saved within the file, including search, drill-down, print and export – but not refresh". SAP's KBA 1300699 lists other limits, including no dynamic parameters and no maps.
Use it when the report has saved data and you work on Windows.
Option 2: Third-party viewers
Third-party viewers can add features that the SAP viewer lacks, such as a refresh against the database. Ken Hamady's comparison of Crystal Reports viewers (November 2024) lists nine active products, from free tools to about $100 per user.
The comparison suggests that you shortlist two or three viewers and try each one with your own reports.
Option 3: The Narity Reporter viewer
Narity Reporter is an independent implementation. Its desktop viewer reads .rpt files directly and needs no SAP runtime or separate .NET installation.
- Platforms: Windows x64, Linux x64, and macOS on Apple silicon.
- Data: the rows saved in the file, or live data from PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQLite, with report parameters.
- Output: page preview, PDF export, and export to an editable JSON definition.
- Licence: the download is free. Without a licence, each preview page and each exported PDF page carries an
UNLICENSED COPYmark.
Narity Reporter is in preview. Compare its output with a Crystal PDF of the same report. Check the current limitations.
To try it without installing anything, upload a report to the online demo. Without saved data, it shows the report's layout with a notice. It accepts files up to 12 MB, never connects to a database, and returns a watermarked PDF of up to 10 pages.
Reports from old Crystal versions
SAP's KBA 1219045 says that later Crystal Reports versions open reports from version 7 and later. After you save a report in Crystal Reports 9 or later, Crystal Reports 8.5 and earlier cannot open it. Back up old files before you save them in a newer version.
The Narity Reporter test files include reports from Crystal Reports 8 and 10 and SAP's sample reports. Version support varies by report, so test your own files.
